The 6500 European members of the Welcome Home Nature Club by Versele-Laga chose the 5 most popular birds in our gardens, after the world famous African Big Five. So now we have our one and only "Wild Bird Big Five"!
The robin was by far the most popular bird in our gardens, with no fewer than four out of five voters putting the little bird with its striking breast and friendly face on their list. The robin was even number one in all countries! A strong performance for a bird that is actually listed in the top 10 of bird counts in only a few European countries. Nevertheless, it is a bird that likes to be close to houses and people, which undoubtedly convinced many people to vote for it. Interesting fact: did you know that you can easily distinguish the males from the females in robins because their chests are noticeably redder?
The "Wild Bird Big Five" is completed by four birds that like to hang around our homes and gardens and, unlike the robin, score high on the European bird counts: the blue tit (51.4%), great tit (44.8%), house sparrow (32.9%) and the blackbird (32.4%).
With that, in addition to the African Big Five (the leopard, the lion, the elephant, the rhino and the buffalo), the European "Wild Bird Big Five" is now also known: the robin, the blue tit, great tit, house sparrow and the blackbird. And to enjoy the Big Five, you don't even have to travel far. You can admire them almost daily in your garden or on your terrace, especially if you offer them some Menu Nature bird food!
The members of the WHN Club, who come from all over Europe, care about the animals and nature around our homes and through the Versele-Laga WHN Club support initiatives that help our garden birds, farmyard animals and small mammals.
