You want to give your rabbit or rodent the best of the best. You house it in a spacious, clean cage, take good care of it and give it quality food: pellets, hay, fresh vegetables, fresh water. But how are you supposed to preserve the pet food?
Pellets or muesli
Feed for rabbits and rodents is best kept in a dry, cool and dark place. Leave the pet food in the package, and store it in a feed barrel or storage box. This way you make sure that no humidity or air can reach the feed and you reduce the risk of mould. At the same time, the aromas, scents and nutrients are optimally preserved. Food barrels or storage boxes are often made of plastic, which can give off its odour to the food.
Keep the lid tightly closed. This way you ensure that the vitamins and minerals in the pellets or muesli are optimally preserved. Some vitamins are essential for certain rodents (think of vitamin C for guinea pigs).
Furthermore, if you are giving pellets from a feed barrel, make sure that it is completely empty before you fill it up again. This means that the same food does not always remain at the bottom.
Hay
Like the other pet food, hay is best kept in a dry, well-ventilated place. Does the hay have an unpleasant smell or do you suspect mould? Get rid of it! Do not take any chances with the health of your rodent or rabbit. Because feeding hay can sometimes be a dusty affair, you can store this feed in a large storage box.
Vegetables and fruit
When you feed your pet fresh vegetables, they should be just that - fresh. Bad fruit or vegetables can easily make your animal sick. This pet food should preferably be kept in the refrigerator, but let it come to room temperature before you spoil your animals with it.
Water
Pets must have access to fresh, clean water at all times. Refresh their drinking water every day and try to shield their drinking bottle or bowl from sunlight so that it will not get too hot. In winter, the water should not become too cold when it is freezing outside. Then you place it in a sufficiently warm place.
