Vaccinate your rabbit – do not give viruses a chance

Naturally, you want to give your rabbit a good life, with as much affection and as little suffering as possible. Take timely action so that dangerous viruses do not stand a chance of harming your rabbit.

Myxomatosis

This virus is transmitted by fleas, mosquitoes and flies. Protect your pet from fleas by regularly giving him or her an anti-flea treatment. Also prevent contact between your rabbit and wild rabbits, because the virus is mainly found in these rabbits.

RHD

This aggressive virus has two variants, RHDV1 and RHDV2, the latter of which has been around in Belgium since 2016. Your rabbit can get infected through direct contact, food and drinking water, stinging insects, your hands and shoes and even bedding. To keep your rabbit healthy, regular disinfection and good hygiene are a must.

Immunise your pet too!

If you follow this advice, you will already be doing a lot to protect your rabbit. But myxomatosis and RHD are untreatable, so be sure to have your pet vaccinated every year, preferably in the spring. This should include a vaccine against myxomatosis and RHDV1 but also a separate vaccine against RHDV2 (which works for six months). This way, your rabbit will stay healthy and in top shape!
