A well-equipped and spacious henhouse and run are no luxury for your chickens. It prevents your chickens from escaping or being an easy victim of the foxes in the area. In addition, a happy, stress-free chicken provides more and better eggs.
The chicken coop
Tip 1: The surface area
When buying or building a chicken coop, it is advisable to think thoroughly about several issues in advance. First of all, the dimensions are very important. For the average chicken, an area of 1 square meter for 3 chickens is sufficient. When you keep larger breeds (e.g. Cochin, Brahma, ...) you should allow for a bit more space.
Also, think about the future. Many novice chicken keepers start with two or three chickens and consequently buy a smaller coop. When afterwards you want to buy more chickens, you will have to buy a larger coop.
Tip 2: Height and maintenance
Consider the maintenance and lifespan of the coop. Make sure that the coop stands on legs well above the ground. Place the legs on stones so that the wood does not rot from moisture. The height is also an important factor in the cleaning of the coop. Coops that are low to the ground are difficult to clean. The ceiling height is also important. In principle, one metre of ceiling height is sufficient for a chicken, but when you go higher, you will see that cleaning the coop will be much easier.
Tip 3: Protection against foxes
The fox is the greatest enemy of your chickens. For a fox, a fresh chicken is a real delicacy. Provide the coop with a hatch, so that your chickens are safe at night. Do not forget to open the loft in the morning and close it at night. There are also automatic gates. They close the coop automatically when it gets dark. In the morning, the door will open without any human intervention. Keeping chickens does not have to be difficult at all!
Tip 4: Keep the loft draft-free
Make sure to keep the coop dry and draft-free. Comfortable perches, good ventilation and sufficient incidence of light are also important. Use a good ground cover, too. This will prevent infections and diseases from spreading.
