Courtship is something you see many animals do, but this is something especially birds do often. The males try to attract mating partners with special behaviour during the mating period. Some birds will dance and sing; others will show off their physical characteristics or bring the females "presents".
Love is in the air
From the early spring onwards, the air is buzzing with male birds that go out courting, because while singing, every male is looking for a female. As they wolf-whistle at the girls in their area, the thought of building a nest and starting a family slumbers in the back of their minds. The song thrush composes beautiful music with the following words: 'I am single and free to date...', while the black bird chooses to sing 'who wants to raise a nest with me?' So a bird song is actually an "advert in a lonely hearts column' to music.
This is the home of the best!
No matter how different the tunes sound, they tell the available ladies: 'I am the best!' A powerful voice indicates that the soloist is a strong man, who will conceive healthy bird children. For other males of the same species, the music that sounds so sweet to our ears means: 'Get out of here; I am in charge of this area!'
Singing and dancing?
A series of songs is not enough to become a close-knit couple. The male's singing is accompanied by 'courtship behaviour', body language intended to confirm the early relationship. For example, some gentlemen show off their colourful feathers, others shake their wings or perform a skilful air ballet. It is remarkable that the future father spoils his future wife with tasty snacks. This way, he is saying that he will take good care of her during the breeding season. And that he takes his job as a daddy seriously!
