Rabbits can be lovely pets, but they do require a lot of attention. What care does your rabbit need on a daily, weekly and yearly basis to stay healthy and happy?
Daily
Give your rabbit a generous amount of hay or grass every day. Twice a day, in the morning and evening, you add a dry compound feed, fruit and vegetables or herbs, plants and flowers. Remove all leftovers every day to prevent them from rotting in the cage.
Rabbits must also always have access to fresh water. So, change the water in the water bottle every day. If your rabbit stays outside in winter, make sure to regularly check that the water does not freeze.
Weekly
Clean the rabbit hutch once a week. To do this, take the rabbit out of the cage and discard the old bedding (wood chips, wood shavings, pressed wood pellets, straw...), hay and food. Check that the cage is not damaged in a way that could injure your rabbit. Then place fresh wood shavings, hay and food in the cage or hutch, after which you put your rabbit back in his house.
You also have to take care of your darling's coat. Short-haired rabbits are brushed once a week. Long-haired rabbits need daily care. Also regularly cut your pet's nails to prevent them from growing uncomfortably long. When you clean the cage, you can also check your rabbit for signs of illness at the same time. Look at the droppings in the cage. Do they look normal? If they are soft, your rabbit may be suffering from diarrhoea. A lack of droppings can, in turn, indicate constipation. Visit the vet immediately if you are in doubt.
Yearly
As part of their routine care, six-week-old rabbits must be vaccinated against RHD and myxomatosis. Visit the vet for a repeat vaccination every year.
